Ten results, one decision
The classic model was an implicit deal: the engine gathers and ranks, you compare and choose. The value was in being there — appearing among the ten meant earning the right to be assessed. Conversion then depended on how convincing you were against the other nine.
Two names, no decision left to take
When the question is “which is the best window frame company in Milan”, an answering system does not return ten links: it returns two or three names with a reason. The comparison already happened, elsewhere, before the user could take part in it. Whoever is not among those names did not lose the comparison: they were never compared.

Why this is not about keywords
Optimising for a list means being findable. Earning a citation inside an answer means being understood and being considered reliable: the system has to be able to take a statement from you and put it in its own mouth without risk. The measure is not the density of a term, it is how well a statement stands on its own.
- A headline that says what you do beats a headline that evokes a feeling.
- A price, a geographic boundary, a delivery time are quotable; “tailored solutions” is not.
- A fact repeated identically in three places on the site is worth more than a brilliant fact written once.
What still holds from before
The foundations. A site the crawler cannot reach, that answers slowly, that hides text inside images, stays out of both worlds. Technical SEO has not been replaced: it has become the minimum requirement rather than the advantage.
Frequently asked questions
Does this mean SEO is over?
No. It means SEO covers half the journey: getting you where the system can read you. The other half is being chosen once read, and that is played by different rules.
How many names does an answer usually show?
Usually two or three, sometimes one. That is the difference that matters: ten positions tolerated the mediocrity of sixth place, three names do not.
